Daily Itinerary:
Day 1 We'll fly today to Salt Lake City, where our tour director and chartered motorcoach await our arrival. We'll soon be heading for Bingham Canyon, site of the massive Utah Copper Mine, the world's largest man-made excavation. The awesome pit here is two miles across and growing daily, and its half-mile depth could easily accommodate two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other! We'll check in nearby at the centrally-located Shilo Inn Hotel, then have our trip orientation “get-together” and a memorable “welcome” dinner at historic Lion House, once one of Brigham Young's official family residences, and now a group dining center operated by the LDS Church. (D)
Day 2 This morning we'll attend the broadcast performance by the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, then there will be time for sightseeing in this handsome city . . . we'll learn the story of the Mormon people and their religion, as our guided "highlights" tour features such sights as the Mormon Temple and Tabernacle, the Utah State Capitol, the extensive Family History Library, Fort Douglas, the Pioneer Trail State Park and "This is the Place"Monument, plus Trolley Square. Next, heading for the Gem State of Idaho, our routing will take us through Pocatello and Idaho Falls on the way to West Yellowstone, Montana, the western gateway of Yellowstone National Park. Lodging at the Brandin’ Iron Inn has been reserved here for the next two nights. (B, D)
Day 3 Yellowstone National Park was the first national park to be established, and is still one of the largest and most popular with vacationers. Here are outstanding natural spectacles, including renowned geysers and thermal basins. Our tour itinerary today begins with the extensive Norris Geyser Basin, filled with an incredible variety steam vents, mud pots, geysers and hot springs. Continuing on, we'll explore Mammoth Hot Springs, pass through Tower Junction and through the scenic mountain vistas of Dunraven Pass, and thrill to the awesome, 1,200-foot-deep Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, including picture-postcard views from Inspiration and Lookout Point. Late this afternoon, we'll return to West Yellowstone for the night. (CB)
Day 4 Continuing our tour of Yellowstone National Park, we'll first vist impressive Firehole Canyon and Falls, then head for Old Faithful Geyser, named for its eruption on the average of every 71 minutes for over 100 years. Yellowstone Lake, the highest large lake in the country, is next along our route. Then, traveling along Rockefeller Memorial Parkway into beautiful Grand Teton National Park, we'll see Jackson and Jenny Lakes, the Chapel of the Transfiguration, and, of course, the rugged, towering Tetons. We arrive in Jackson Hole this afternoon, where overnight accommodations await at the 49’er Inn & Suites in this picturesque resort community. A fun-filled evening, complete with tasty dinner and melodious Western entertainment, has also been planned at the Bar J Chuckwagon. (CB, D)
Day 5 This morning, one of the highlights of our trip is a delightful scenic (no whitewater) float trip on the Snake River, along the base of the majestic Tetons. After a stop for lunch (on your own) and browsing in downtown Jackson, we'll continue south through Bridger-Teton National Forest along the winding Snake River, then pause en route for a visit to a local cheese factory. Entering the southeastern corner of Idaho late this afternoon, we'll be guests for lodging at the Best Western Clover Creek Inn and "farewell" dinner at Butch Cassidy’s in Montpelier. (CB, D)
Day 6 First we’ll visit Montpelier’s fascinating National Oregon/California Trail Center, on the Clover Creek Encampment site, which depicts the pioneers’ journey across the continent, then we'll pass Bear Lake en route back to Salt Lake City. Arriving at Salt Lake City International Airport, we'll board our homeward-bound flight, bringing memories of an outstanding Western vacation. (CB)
